From Linda Briggs: Hello! I have fond memories of my days at Uxendon (1956-1962), particularly excellent teaching from Mrs Hogg, Mr Smith and Mrs Dunn and of course of Mr McDonald. We were privileged to be taken by him to Saturday morning concerts at the Royal Festival Hall. He also taught recorder and violin playing in leisure time. The school choir joined forces with others in Wembley to participate in concerts at the Town Hall, and we had a country dancing evening each year.
From Nic Maennling now in Canada: I was delighted to discover the website for Uxendon Manor School which I attended from 1949(?) to the end of the 1951 term when my family emigrated to Canada. My recollections of the school are generally hazy but I seem to remember the following in some detail: - the bomb shelters and the stink and filth contained therein - attending what seemed to be a green temporary classrooms heated by a space heater upon which little bottles of milk were warmed. The spoon full of cod liver oil (?) - always burped up at playtime ! Incidentally, isn't Mrs. Inkpen a superb name for a teacher !!
From Brian Anthony also in Canada: I began school in 1948 at Uxendon Manor and continued there until my parents, younger brother and I left for Canada to start a new life. Unlike most emigrants who went by boat, we flew, leaving on February 5th and arriving in Canada on February 6th. As we approached the Canadian coast, the pilot came on the intercom to utter the memorable words "the King is dead, long live the Queen". I therefore measure my life in Canada by the reign of Her Majesty to the very day.
From Lynne Richards (1954-61) now Lynne Cowley: It really is great to have this website. I remember going to the Robert Mayer concerts and recorder lessons.
From Jim Mangnall in New Zealand who left the school in 1947 or 1948. He served with the RAF and eventually worked with Air New Zealand. He can remember Mrs Inkpen, Mr Hall and the Caretaker Mr Simons. He also remembers "we used to get our own tennis balls off the roof. We used to shin up the drainpipes and the teachers used to play hell with us if we got caught."
